Although mezzo soprano Mutsumi Hatano has been widely praised for performances of English renaissance lute songs, her recent work is not restricted to early music genres. She has just released a CD of German lieder entitled "Nachtstuck" (Nocturne). Her accompanist is Takashi Tsunoda, who has been performing with her on the lute since her debut, but this time Mr. Tsunoda's instrument is a nineteenth century guitar.

Each of the songs in this collection encapsulates the glory of existence in some unique way. Ms. Hatano makes singing seem effortless, but her voice has such depth one feels rather than just hears these songs of the bitter sweetness of life and reflections on mortality. Over two centuries the guitar has built up a milieu especially suited to this genre of song. Under Mr. Tsunoda's hand, the instrument gives the singer nuanced and mellifluous responses. Close your eyes and be taken back to nineteenth century Vienna for an intimate evening of Schubert and other delectable lieder.
