Distinguished by the opportunity it provides to receive individualized lessons from master wind musicians of other countries, the Hamamatsu International Wind Instruments Academy and Festival will be held in Hamamatsu City (Shizuoka Prefecture) from August 1 to 5, 2008. The academy will provide five classes each in woodwinds and brass. All slots for students have been filled, but applications to audit classes will be accepted for up to 200 people.
Academy instructors include principal soloists of orchestras and music professors from around the world. This year, there will be 11 instructors from abroad, including Wenzel Fuchs, principal clarinetist at the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and David Krauss, principal trumpet of The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Of the four Japanese instructors, the profiles of three can be found at this site: Shigenori Kudo (flute), Nobuya Sugawa (saxophone) and Shoichiro Hokazono (euphonium).
The festival will offer two concerts. The Opening Concert, to be held before the Academy, will be a lavish tournament of performances by the Academy instructors, with a very substantial offering of classical wind music from Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Mozart, Rossini, Dvorak, Paul Hindemith, and the world premiere of a new work by a Shinji Urakabe. The Premium Concert will consist of performances by selected outstanding students of the respective classes, offering listeners an interesting opportunity for make their own judgements on who are the most promising performers.
