The 1st Tokyo International Viola Competition
The 1st Tokyo International Viola Competition will be held from 23rd to 31st of May 2009 in Japan. Application deadline is December 1, 2008.
It is the first international competition in Japan exclusively for the viola. The competition is held every three years as part of Viola Space, a viola festival founded in 1992 through the initiative of internationally distinguished violist Nobuko Imai, and dedicated to “celebrating the viola, introducing outstanding works and new works for viola, and promoting young artists”. Winners of the Competition will be engaged to appear at Viola Space the following year or later. In addition to the competition rounds, the International Viola Competition will host workshops in association with Viola Space and concerts by jury members, advisors, and winners, thereby continuing to explore the diverse potential of the viola.
Masao Kawasaki and Nobuko Imai perform at the Viola Space 2007.

Antoine Tamestit and Toho Gakuen Orchestra perform at the Viola Space 2006.
