Suntory Music Foundation (chaired by Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi) holds annually Summer Festival at Suntory Hall since 1987. This year's Festival, commemorating its 20th anniversary as well as reopening of Suntory Hall after a major renovation, took place from 1 through 8.
Two special programs of the 20th anniversary were given this year. Opening night concert started with Atsuhiko Gondai’s new commissioned work for sho and organ, followed by orchestral works of 20 years ago. John Cage’s last opera “Europera 5” was Japan premiered as another special program, performed by Akie Amou, Yumi Koyama, Rikuya Terashima with the direction by Tomomi Adachi

Jean-Claude Risset was focused as the theme composer in "Suntory Hall International Program for Music Composition", the series of concerts which started in 1986 and have been incorporated a part of the festival since 2004. "Schemes, for violin and orchestra", commissioned by Suntory Hall, was premiered in its Main Hall by violinist Mari Kimura who wrote cadenza herself, under the baton of maestro Kazuyoshi Akiyama.

Kimura also premiered “Variants II”, an interactive piece for violin processed in real time by computer, in the Small Hall concert, among the composer’s chamber works Japan-premiered by Ensemble Nomad conducted by Mr.Norio Sato.

In "Music in Current" series in this festival, the newest orchestral and chamber works composed in 2002-2006 have been Japan-premiered.

The 17th competition of Akutagawa Award for Music Composition was hold in the framework of the Festival. After the premiere performance of the commissioned work by Yumi Saiki, 15th Akutagawa Award winner, pieces of three finalists of this year were performed by New Japan Philharmonic conducted by Maestro Kazuhiko Komatsu. Three judges, Shin’ichiro Ikebe, Toshi Ichiyanagi and Keiko Harada, discussed in public and finally chose Ms.Noriko Koide's "Keselanpatharan" as winner of the 17th Akutagawa Award for Music Composition. The Foundation has awarded Ms.Koide ¥500,000 and commissioned her to compose a new piece of orchestral music, which is scheduled to premiere in 2009.

The Suntory Music Foundation was established in 1969 with the objective of contributing to the development of western-style classical and contemporary music in Japan and chaired by Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi. The main activities of the foundation are annual presentation of the Suntory Music Award and Keizo Saji Prize, Akutagawa Award for Music Composition, publication of a Bibliography on Japanese Composition, etc.
