Planned activities of Mo. Lazarev with the Japan Phil as its chief conductor will be announced in October, 2007 when Mo. Lazarev will be in Japan to perform with the orchestra for its 594th subscription concert. Also on that occasion, announcement will be made of a long-term action plan for the Japan Phil's 55th anniversary in June, 2011. The works to be performed in October will include the Shostakovich Symphony No. 5 and Prokofiev's "Alexander Nevsky" cantata.
Yuka Eguchi To Become New Concertmaster -- Concertmaster Triumvirate System Adopted
Ms. Yuka Eguchi will become the Japan Phil's new concertmaster in November, 2007. Also at that time, a new three-person concertmaster system will go into effect, with Mr. Masayuki Kino and Mr. Yasutomo Ogitani each serving as solo concertmasters. Mr. Ogitani will make his first appearance as a soloist for a subscription concert in Tokyo in October, 2007 performing Alexander Glazunov's violin concerto with the orchestra. Ms. Eguchi will make her debut appearance with the Japan Phil as concertmaster at a subscription concert in Yokohama in March, 2008, when Brahms' violin concerto will be performed.
New Advisors Naomoto Okayama and Jan Willem Loot Welcomed
With a view to upgrading the orchestra's administrative capabilities, in June of this year the staff welcomed on Mr. Naomoto Okayama (senior advisor of the Association of Japanese Symphony Orchestras) in the capacity of planning advisor. In addition, Mr. Jan Willem Loot (executive director of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam) will become artistic advisor.
New Executive Director Is Toshikuni Hirai; Haruo Shimada Becomes a Director
At the first board/council meeting for the 2007 fiscal year, held on July 2, 2007, Mr. Toshikuni Hirai (previous vice president and joint CEO of Intec Holdings) was elected executive director. At the same time, Mr. Haruo Shimada, professor emeritus of Keio University and president of Chiba University of Commerce became a new director.
