It was announced on June 29 that Mayuko Kamio of Japan was among the first prize winners in the violin division of 13th International Tchaikovsky Competition, held in Moscow. Ms. Kamio became the second Japanese to take a first prize for violin in this competition, following Akiko Suwanai in 1990, at the ninth competition. She is among the artists profiled at this site.
After the awards were given, the following statement from Ms. Kamio was released.
"I was feeling disheartened during the competition and at one point I even thought about quitting, so I am truly happy with this outcome! My thanks to everyone who supported me. I am deeply grateful to you."
Held once every four years, the Tchaikovsky competition has been universally recognized as one of the most important music competitions since it was established in 1958. Ms. Kamio's prize has made her the third consecutive Japanese winner in the competition, following soprano Mieko Sato in the voice division of the 11th competition (1998) and Ayako Uehara for piano in the 12th competition (2002).
Born in Osaka in 1986, Ms. Kamio began performing internationally in her pre-teen years. She made her formal debut at the age of 10, in a performance with Charles Dutoit. In 1998, at the age of 11, she became the youngest ever junior division prizewinner in the Menuhin International Violin Competition. She debuted in the U.S. in 2001, performing recitals in Boston and Washington. Thereafter, she performed with the Russian National Orchestra, the Prague Philharmonic and the BBC Philharmonic. Presently, she is studying under Zakhar Bron in Zurich.
