Suntory Music Foundation Summer Festival 2006
The 16th Akutagawa Award for Music Composition
 Suntory Music Foundation (chaired by Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi) holds annually Summer Festival at Suntory Hall since 1987. This year's Festival took place from 22 through 30 August.
 Marc-André Dalbavie was focused as the theme composer in "Suntory Hall International Program for Music Composition", the series of concerts which started in 1986 and have been incorporated a part of the festival since 2004. He is the second French composer focused in the series after Gilbert Amy, and his work had been introduced to Japan for the first time in 1995 by Pierre Boulez during Boulez Festival in Tokyo. "Variations orchestrales sur une pièce de Janácek", commissioned by Suntory Hall, was premiered in its Main Hall under the baton of the composer, who also Japan premiered "Sculpture" of Magnus Lindberg. In the Small Hall concert, chamber works were premiered by Ensemble Nomad also conducted by Mr.Dalbavie.

 Lectures by Mr.Dalbavie have been given to the enthusiastic public prior to two concerts.
 In "Music in Current" series in this festival, the newest orchestral and chamber works composed in 2002-2005 including two young Korean composers' works, have been Japan-premiered.
 Two evenings of "A portrait of a patron" introduced the orchestral and chamber music either commissioned by or dedicated to Paul Sacher, the great patron of music of the last century. Maestro Ken Takaseki conducted Boulez' "Sur Incises", Lutoslawski, Takemitsu and Bartok to illustrate the great orchestra works born thanking to the patron. Norio Sato and the Festival Strings performed instrumental and chamber works in the Small Hall concert.

 The 16th competition of Akutagawa Award for Music Composition was hold in the framework of the Festival. After the premiere performance of the commissioned work by Masahiro Miwa, 14th Akutagawa Award winner, pieces of three finalists of this year were performed by New Japan Philharmonic conducted by Maestro Kazuhiko Komatsu. Three judges, Tetsuji Emura, Toshio Hosokawa and Joji Yuasa discussed in public and finally chose Ms.Tomiko Kohjiba's "Sept profiles non erodés - pour piano et orchestre" as winner of the 16th Akutagawa Award for Music Composition.
 500,000 yen cash award was given and a new orchestra work is commissioned by the Foundation to Ms.Kohjiba to schedule to be premiered in 2008.
