Junichi Hirokami
Mr.Junichi Hirokami
The Columbus Symphony Orchestra, of Columbus, Ohio, has selected Mr. Junichi Hirokami as its seventh music director. The 47-year-old Japanese conductor has signed a three-year contract with the orchestra that begins with the 2006-07 season. Under its terms, Mr. Hirokami will conduct for seven weeks during the first year and ten weeks annually thereafter.
This will be Mr. Hirokami's first conducting position in the United States. His inaugural performances will be a series of subscription concerts at the orchestra's home Ohio Theatre on February 17, 18 and 19.
Mr. Hirokami's selection as music director from a field of 22 candidates was the culmination of a three-year search by the Columbus Symphony. His relationship with the orchestra began when they performed together in May, 2005, an experience that proved to be mutually exciting. He was invited to conduct again in September of the same year.
