Profile
Tosiya Suzuki(1961 in Japan) studied the recorder with kazuo Hanaoka in Tokyo and at the Sweelinck Conservatorium with Walter van Hauwe in Amsterdam. He specializes particularly in contemporary music and has been working to extend techniques and possibilities of the recorder through working with composers such as Luca Cori, Brian Ferneyhough, Luca Francesconi, Keiko Harada, Toshio Hosokawa, Ichiro Nodaira, Hiroyuki Itoh, Hitoshi Nakamura, Uros Rojko, Salvatore Sciarrino and Gerhard Staebler. And he premiered their works. As a soloist, he performed at prestigeous contemporary music festivals including Wien Modern, Neue Musik Zurich, Gaudeams, Darmstadt, ISCM World Music Days(1995, 2000, 2001 and 2002), Festival d'Automne a Paris, Akiyoshidai, Takefu, Royaumont, Composium(Tokyo), Europe-Asia, Klangspuren and Tongyeong. In 2001 he started a duo with Mayumi Miyata(sho-player). He has had recitals and workshops in many countries in Europe, Russia, USA(UCSD), Turkey, Hong Kong, South Korea and Japan. He has been awarded many prizes including the Darmstadt Kranichstein Musikpreis(1996). His solo CD with works by Ferneyhough, Hosokawa and Berio has been released from the label MusicScape(http://www.musicscape.net). Among the highly acclaimed reviews, Le Monde described him"An exceptional interpreter of B. Ferneuhogh's compositions, T. Suzuki modeled forms conjugating intensity and transiency like statues and then showed his talents as a colorist...."
