Ma Xiaohui is one of the best traditional Chinese instrument performers of today. She is erhu soloist of the Traditional Chinese Music Orchestra of Shanghai, where she was erhu principal in 1993-1998 and concert master in 1998-2000. She attended the Shanghai Conservatory and studied under the eminent professor of erhu, Wang Yi, before joining the Traditional Chinese Music Orchestra. She represents a new generation of artists and is a role model for many young musicians in Shanghai. Ms. Ma has given over hundred recitals in China and abroad and wherever she appeared, she was welcomed with praise for the "erhu virtuoso" and "rare gem of the Chinese music world." She has performed with such ensembles as the China National Symphony, Shanghai Symphony, and Singapore State Symphony. In 1998 Ma Xiaohui has given her European debut with German pianist Tim Ovens at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. She also played with the French National Symphony Orchestra in Paris, with the Greek Symphony Orchestra in Athens, at the Spring Festival in Prague, the Grand Theatre in Seoul, the Philarmonie Munich, the Beethoven House in Bonn, the Hong Kong Traditional Chinese Orchestra and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, the German Hamburg Symphony Orchestra, and at other festivals around the world. Furthermore, playing the erhu solo, she featured with Yoyo Ma in the film "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon." In 2003 Ms.Ma Xiaohui will also give a few recitals in Japan.
