Born on Aug. 19, 1986, Gen Yokosaka began to study the cello at the age 4 and a half. He won the top prizes in the numerous competitions in Japan including the first prize in the Viva Hall Cello Competition in 2002 as the youngest competitor in the history of the competition at the age 15.
Since then, He has performed with such conductors as Seiji Ozawa, Kazuyoshi Akiyama, Naoto Otomo, Ken Takaseki, and Daisuke Soga.
The orchestras he performed with include The New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, The Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, and The Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra.
His solo performance was telecasted by NHK in 2001, and the Rococo Variation (Tchaikovsky) with The Tokyo Symphony Orchestra was also telecasted by TV Asahi in 2004.
In chamber music, he was the youngest cellist to play in the "Project Q," the series to perform all the works of the string quartet by Beethoven at Casals Hall in Tokyo in 2001, and has also performed Popper's "Requiem for 3 Cellos and Piano," Op. 66 with Nobuko Yamazaki and Ryosuke Hori.
The pianists he played with include such renowned artists as Kei Ito and Miyuki Washimiya.
He was the soloist for Elgar's Concerto with The Japan Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Kennichiro Kobayashi in July and for Dvorak's concerto with The Yomiuri Symphony Orchestra of Japan in August 2004.
His teachers include Katsuro Washio and Hakuro Mori at Toho School of Music; David Geringas and Jian Wang at the Ishikawa Music Academy.
