Michie Koyama quickly moved into international competition, winning third place at the 7th Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in 1982, followed by a fourth place award in the 1985 Chopin International Piano Competition. She was the first Japanese pianist to receive awards at both of these major competitions. Her talents continued to win competition honours as Ms Koyama was given the 12th Chopin Association Award in 1986.
She has have included performances with some of the world's most renown conductors including James Conlon, Otmar Suitner, Seiji Ozawa, Andrew Davis, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Horst Stein, Neville Marriner, Jean Fournet, Charles Dutoit, Vladimir Fedoseev and others, and orchestras; Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Symphony Orchestra, NHK Symphony Orchestra, The Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields, Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Moscow Radio Symphony, Russian National Symphony Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra, Philhamonische Virtuosen Berlin, among others. Most recently, in September 2002, Ms Koyama received critical acclaims for the Japan and US tours she made with Baltimore Symphony Orchestra under Termikanov. Furthermore, Ms Koyama has frequently performed in chamber music concerts such as duo with violinist Augustin Dumay with whom she has performed concerts in Japan and in China, piano duo with Maria João Pires and duo with cellist Mario Brunello. As an exclusive recording artist under the Sony Music Japan International, Ms Koyama has released 16 recordings..
